The rare Nike “Moon Shoe” was auctioned with an asking price of US$ 80,000. The shoe was expected to sell for up to US$ 200,000, but it far exceeded expectations, with someone snapping up the Moon Shoe for almost half a million dollars.

The Moon shoe was designed by Bill Bowerman, one of the co-founders of Nike. The waffle sole running shoe was made for the 1972 Olympics and only 12 pairs were created. Bowerman created the waffle pattern using his wife's waffle iron, which he poured rubber into. Decades later, the waffle sole traction would be a well-known Nike shoe accessory.
