The US Mint designed the US Barber coinage, which was a collection of coins designed by the Mint's chief engraver, Charles E. Barber. The coins were designed in 1891, and the 1894-S Barber Dime is one of the rarest in existence.

The dime, like the 1804 dollar and the 1913 Liberty Head nickel, is worth much more than its face value. The S-Barber was one of only two dozen minted, and only nine have survived to this day. All nine are proof coins, with two showing heavy use. One sold for US$ 1.3 million in 2005. Two years later, a copy sold for US$ 1.9 million.
